This time last week

February 29, 2008

I’ve done the “this time last week” or “by this time next week” in my head for as long as I can remember. The latter is used for something dreaded, providing a stress reliever by way of reminder that soon the dreaded thing will be over. The former is most often associated with vacation and the wistful longing to be back again. Wednesday truly kicked my butt and “this time last week” was a constant loop in my over-capacity brain.

Now it’s Friday and everything seems possible again. Probably because it’s sunny and balmy, unlike this time last week when we were knee deep in snow.

And it’s not just a Friday — it’s a bonus day! A leaping kind of day. A day for thought-provoking questions like this: would you rather a) be 10 pounds lighter or b) get an amazing haircut?

Food for thought.

Eureka!

We found that white stuff we went a’hunting for …

Odd isn’t it that in many parts of California you have to drive to find snow? And when you do and it’s the first time you’ve ever been in snow, you just dive in!

Rainy days and Mondays

February 19, 2008

So it’s not really Monday but it feels like one since it seems that most folks had yesterday off. My clients were working so I was too but K has a holiday. Today must have felt like a Monday to her because she was Miss Moody. Not even the yellow boots helped.

Fast forward to the afternoon. Still Miss Moody when I picked her up at the Y. You would have thought the world had ended, looking at her face. On the way to run a few errands, she said not one word. Our first stop was the art store and, I swear, after a minute inside, I had a different child. A happy, excited little chatterbox. Art stores are magical like that.

Posed

This is the piece of popcorn that I’ve walked by a dozen times since it dropped on the floor. Today I picked it up. Then I put it back, played with the lighting and took a picture so it could be recorded here. It’s gone now.

An impromptu coffee break

A friend stopping by to borrow a suitcase was all the reason I needed to have a little party. Warm scones, fruit salad and lively conversation were the perfect ingredients for a half-hour of fun on a sunny Friday. Happy weekend.

And before all that …

There were the fun couple days devoted to making Valentine’s for friends … cards from K, felt fortune cookies from me. I forgot (gasp) to photograph them before packing and shipping but fortunately Kristy sent me a shot of Valentine’s morning for her girls. The cards are her design (she’s an amazing designer) as is the breakfast (but I want some, it looks so good!). The little felt fortune cookies were stuffed with fortune, stickers and chocolates.

There’s still time for Valentine’s fun. Send an e-card! I’m headed over to www.hoopsandyoyo.com for more Valentine’s giggles now!

Stress management

February 13, 2008

My go-to remedy for managing stress has always been to write lists and make order. It’s the way I calm down and get perspective.

Just recently, I found another stress reliever — embroidery. It’s been quite a few years since I picked up needle and thread but adorable patterns from Wee Wonderfuls prompted me to give it a go. I learned the slip stitch (a version of the stem stitch that I already knew) from a combination of online images and a children’s sewing book I got for K. Now I’m hooked. I pick up the hoop, do a stitch or two and immediately feel soothed. If already in a good mood, my spirits lift further. Pretty amazing results from a bit of fabric and thread. Now, what to do with all these creations? I’ll get back to you on that.

Double number, divisible by 2

February 12, 2008

feb12.jpg

How perfect is this card? It delights me as I celebrate another birthday. So too do all the calls, IMs, notes and packages that I’ve been so lucky to receive. I’m a big fan of birthdays. Big. Fan.

When I was little, I loved that I shared my birthday with Abraham Lincoln. Back in the day, that meant a school holiday, which I co-opted to be my own personal holiday. Valentine’s Day became part of the celebration too, so I was never sad if I didn’t have a sweetheart. All the hearts and flowers were just a part of my birthday week. Oh yes, a week. I am a firm believer that one day is not sufficient to celebrate birthdays. The longer the celebration can stretch out, the better.

Not only do I love my birthday, I’m prone to broadcasting it. When I was in college, I used to remind my friends how many shopping days were left. Kinda surprising they didn’t just ignore the day.

And even though I’m of an age where most people ignore their birthday, I’m still talking about it. For the past few days, I found a way to mention that I’m having an “old lady” birthday in nearly every meeting I attend. Hard to break habits cultivated over decades.

Yes, the number makes me a cringe a little but I wouldn’t trade places with a younger me. I like that I get more sparkly as I get more wrinkles and gray hair. That I have enough life experience to know how not to sweat the small stuff (most of the time). That risks are worth taking. That challenging times ultimately give way to smooth sailing. That you can never be too generous. And that it’s never too late to try something new.

That’s what I know at the start of this double number, divisible by 2 year. What more will I know this time next year? I can’t wait to find out.
