Boy or Girl?

Let’s say you’re throwing a baby shower and the parents-to-be don’t know if the baby is a boy or a girl. (Sidebar: ha! Did anyone think, by the title, that I had an announcement? Cracking up at the thought of it!) Back to the shower.

Baby shower decorations tend toward the frothy and pastel, and are very obviously “boy” or “girl.” You could go the yellow route but what if the guest of honor has a more modern sensibility and pastels are just not the thing? Here are two ideas that were a big hit at a recent shower.

Idea 1: Match the decorations to the colors being used in the nursery. This baby has the cutest nursery with modern furniture and bedding with soothing greens, oranges, browns and hints of blue and yellow. A 27-foot fabric flag banner featuring modern prints in the featured colors brought the idea to life. Tiny baby items (socks, hats) were clipped with small clothespins to the banner. Paired against off-white tableware, the affect was perfect.

Idea 2: Use the favors to extend the color, and to cover both the girl and boy bases. I started with gummi frogs because the new mama has a soft spot for frogs. Then added Jelly Bellys: half the bags had orange and pink; the other half had green and brown (rootbeer flavor, yum!).

Narrow ribbon in orange was used on the green/brown set; green ribbon on the orange/pink for a pleasing contrast that tied the whole scheme together. Ribbon can be super expensive, especially when you’re making 50 favors. I like to keep an eye out for deals at the local fabric store where I happily found for $1/9 yards!

So there you have it. A solution to the “boy or girl” question when it comes to party decorating!
